An active neighborhood watch and hours of volunteer labor donated by residents keep it clean, deter crime and help maintain two city parks. In response to their commitment, the City of Erie made improvements to Levy Park with re-surfaced tennis courts, new playground equipment and a drinking fountain. In addition, they now offer a summer recreation program for neighborhood children. Each spring the Neighborhood Watch sponsors Beauty and the Bluff, an annual trash cleanup where residents and teenage community service volunteers pick up trash and clear debris that accumulates during our long Erie winters. Residents plant and care for two gateway gardens and curb gardens along Parade Street, the neighborhood's main thoroughfare. In the spring of 2013, BEST along with East Bayfront neighbors and volunteers from the Cathedral of St. Paul and ServErie installed the first urban garden in the neighborhood, featuring edible plants. Six families maintain individual garden plots and all neighbors contriubute to caring for plants available to the community. Residents organize and volunteer for neighborhood events like National Night Out, quarterly community meetings and outdoor movie nights. Learn More About the Neighborhood Erie's East Bayfront is a 25-block neighborhood located directly east of Erie's downtown improvement district between Holland and Wayne Streets from East Sixth to East Front Street. Population Approximately 2,340 people live in the neighborhood. Income The median household income is $ 19,514. 43% of residents living in the East Bayfront target area (Census Tract 4) live below the poverty level. Housing There are approximately 1,194 housing units in the East Bayfront neighborhood. 88% of housing units are occupied, while 12% remain vacant. 39% of units are single-family units and 61 % are multi-family units. The majority of housing is renter occupied at 75% compared to 25% owner-occupied units. Crime On July 1, 2009, Erie's East Bayfront became a part of Erie Weed & Seed's target area in response to increased crime as a result of Weed & Seed saturation patrols south of the neighborhood. Street crime is decreasing now that the neighborhood is part of the saturation patrols. In addition, a recent commitment from the Erie Police Department to additional patrols in the neighborhood has almost eliminated incidents of crime and nuisance behaviors. In the spring, the Erie Police Department will bring bike patrols back to the neighborhood, which will further deter criminal activity. -- Contact B.E.S.T. 420 Parade Street Erie, PA 16507 (814) 456-7062 [email protected] -- Facebook Instagram Twitter Instagram GitHub LinkedIn -- Email Us Email me news and updates -- © - All rights reserved.
